The Yogveda Alignment Grid: A Pedagogical Tool for Teachers

Innovation in Yoga Education

At Yoga University Switzerland, we believe that objective standards are required to teach yoga safely. To facilitate this, Dean Shahid Khan developed the Yogveda Alignment Mat—a proprietary grid system that serves as the "textbook on the floor."

This is not merely a yoga mat; it is a didactic instrument used throughout our 200h Diploma Course to demonstrate biomechanical principles.

The Grid System in the Classroom

For student-teachers, the mat functions as a diagnostic tool. It eliminates guesswork from adjustments.

1. Objective Assessment

The grid allows the teacher to objectively measure a student’s stance.

  • Distance: Are the feet too wide for the pelvic structure?

  • Rotation: Is the front foot turned out at the correct 90-degree angle relative to the back foot?

2. Proprioceptive Feedback

The grid teaches the student to self-correct. By aligning with the visual markers, the student develops "geometric intelligence," understanding where their body is in space without needing constant verbal cues.

Why We Use This Tool

Standard yoga education often relies on subjective cues ("Step your foot forward"). The Yogveda curriculum relies on quantifiable geometry.

  • Safety: The grid ensures joints are stacked to prevent shear force.

  • Consistency: It provides a standardized framework for teaching complex Asanas.

  • Efficiency: Teachers can assess a room of 20 students instantly by scanning their alignment against the grid lines.

For External Students & Practitioners

While this tool is standard equipment for our matriculated students, it is also available for external practitioners who wish to apply the Yogveda principles in their home practice.
